Republic of Omijima Island

The Republic of Omijima Island was founded using the closed Omijima Island Elementary School.

The former Omijima Island Elementary School was built in 1954 as a one-story wooden school building, but due to a decrease in the number of children, the school was closed in March 2006. After the closure of the school, local residents established the "Experience Exchange Island, Republic of Omijima Island" in 2007 to utilize the nostalgic school building and revitalize the local community, using the former site of this elementary school as a base to develop a tourism project, a community development project through exchanges with urban residents. In the school building, each classroom and corridor is open to the public as a national museum, guesthouse, parliamentary chamber, etc., and a menu of experiences utilizing the rich natural environment is also offered.

Efforts to turn closed school sites into places for community interaction

The former classrooms are used as a lounge, photo archive, historical and ethnographic reference room, library, guest house, and hands-on experience room (fish handling, soba noodle making), etc., and are utilized as a center for interaction with local residents.
The Kenkoku Festival includes a children’s sumo tournament, a summer tangerine-eating contest, sales of local products, and a bazaar.
■Organizing sporting events includes organizing a grand golf tournament and walking tournaments. We are working to revitalize the local community through exchanges with urban residents.
We accept school excursions and overnight stays in rural fishing villages.
Once a year, we hold a “Meeting on Omijima Island” event for single men and women.
We are always accepting people who want to learn how to fish.
We offer unique experience course tours in three areas (Omi, Otomari, and Ohibi).
We invite prospective immigrants from outside of the prefecture and guide them to vacant houses in the three districts for island life on Omijima Island. We are working to utilize the site of a closed school as a base for island nation building.
■The (former) dormitory for teachers and staff produces and sells “Natsumikan Jelly” using the local specialty of Natsumikan oranges.
