Tawarayama's Grandma Chiyo
The guide for the entire program is Ms. Inoue, the organizer of this event.
In the second half of the event, participants will also experience harvested aromatic distillation over lunch. This is a special event where you can take home the harvested yuzukichi and the finished distilled water.
Nagato Yuzukichi is an original citrus fruit grown in Yamaguchi Prefecture, characterized by its mild acidity and high juice content. As a citrus vinegar, it can be used with a variety of seasonings, and in Nagato it is often used with other local products such as yakitori (grilled chicken) and seafood.
After taking it home, please enjoy using it not only for cooking but also for bathing and other purposes.
Chiyogi's Yuzukichi field, where we will experience harvesting, has become more and more difficult to maintain and harvest every year for Chiyogi, who is over 90 years old and maintains it all by herself.
If the fruit is left unattended, it becomes an obstacle to the next year's harvest, and if there are few opportunities for maintenance, the field itself becomes desolate.
While there are many abandoned and rundown houses in Tawarayama, there are also many abandoned and rundown fields like this one, which are called not "abandoned vacant houses" but "abandoned yuzukichi.
The experience fee includes the cost of future field maintenance, and your participation and enjoyment will help us pass the field on to the next generation.
We also hope that by using yuzukichi peels, which are often thrown away, people will take home with them a sense of caring for things.
Please join us for this experience and participate in the story of connecting Nagato Yuzukichi to the next generation.
