The "sanso" (bicycle touring) is a way to enjoy discoveries and encounters unique to a particular place and time of year by riding a bicycle as if you were going for a walk.
With the warm weather continuing and interest in activities that can be enjoyed outdoors increasing, Nagato City is now setting up courses and planning tours so that visitors can fully enjoy its "scattering runs.
In this issue, we report on the "Nagato Scattering Spring," a cycling tour to Nagato Yumoto Onsen Hot Springs, organized as one of the programs of the ongoing " Nagatrip 2021 Spring " experience tourism event.
The starting point was the "Tourist Information Center YUKUTE" at Senza Kitchen, a roadside station equipped with rental bicycles, cycle racks, and tools as the only cycle station in Nagato City. Among the various bicycles on display, including city bicycles, cross bikes, mountain bikes for children, and tandem bicycles for two, we chose "electric bicycles" for this tour.
This year's course is approximately 21 km from the Senzaki district, where the tourist information center is located, through the Fukagawa district, the center of the city, to the hot spring resort area. the route was chosen to avoid main roads and to avoid traffic on streets lined with private homes and near rice paddies.
Along the way, we will stop at cherry blossom viewing spots such as Nagato City General Park in Senzaki and Akasaki Shrine Rakujanshiki, a nationally designated cultural asset in Fukagawa. The Rakujanshiki is dazzlingly green, and visitors can sit and rest, take pictures, and enjoy the quiet time.
The theme of the tour was "Cherry Blossom Tour" because of the spring run, but since the blooming season was earlier than usual this year, many of the cherry trees were already in leaf by the time the tour was conducted in early April.
However, cherry blossoms are not the only thing to look forward to during the scattering run.
Even though the participants live in the same area, many of the roads are not usually traveled.
Participants were encouraged to talk with each other as they saw things that caught their eyes, such as a road here, or a lotus flower here. The time spent in the saddle is full of discoveries, from the gentle breeze blowing through your body to the up-close sound of the Mine Line train shaking the tracks.
This time, the destination is Nagato Yumoto Onsen, which is undergoing renovation in the spring of 2020 under the theme of "Osoto Tengoku.
The area has been transformed into a pleasant strolling hot spring resort with the opening of various stores, including Onyu, a stopover hot spring that is a symbol of the area, cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops.
It is also a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing, with trees lining the "Onshin River" that runs through the center of the hot spring resort.
Participants enjoyed the air of the hot spring resort area with leisurely pedaling while watching people relaxing on the "kawadoko," terraces on the river, or on benches placed along the road. It is about 10 km from the roadside station Senza Kitchen to this point, and the tour started a little after 10:00 a.m. and took about 90 minutes with breaks in between.
One of the attractions of Scattering Run is the local food.
On this day, lunch will be served at Onyu Plaza, located in the center of the hot spring resort area.
Lunch is a take-out box from Onyu Shoku, a restaurant in the hot spring resort area. The box features their signature dish, "Nagato Chicken Rice," served with grilled chicken, vegetables, and Jidori Chicken and Choshu Black Kashiwa Soup to fully enjoy the deliciousness of Nagato City chicken.
Normally, I would have turned around here, but today I went a little further to Pan Kororin, a bakery that opened this year in the Minose area.
Here you can enjoy freshly brewed coffee as well as bread. Perhaps it is the appeal of bicycles that encourages such thoughts of going a little further to the spot.
The latest information on Nagato Yumoto Onsen, where you can enjoy Osoto, can be found on the " Nagato Yumoto Onsen Official Tourist Site. You can also download the " Osoto Tengoku Map" from this site to accompany your stroll.
On the way home with a full stomach, we visited "Nagato Fukagawa Haiji Temple," where you can see the surrounding rice paddies and even the sea, and " Kanzuki River Park, " with its impressive rows of cherry blossoms along the riverside, before heading to "Tourist Information Center YUKUTE," where we left this morning.
Thanks in part to the electric assist that seemed to guide them onward, a pleasant sense of fatigue and accomplishment could be seen on the participants' faces.
This time, with "cherry blossom" as the keyword, we set out for Nagato Yumoto Onsen, a hot spring that is currently attracting a lot of attention.
The tourist information center "YUKUTE" will continue to plan and propose "Scatter Ride" as a new style of travel using rental bicycles. Please give "Nagato Scatter Ride" a try, where you can encounter many discoveries depending on your destination and the season.
