Otosore River Festa 2018, an event where various restaurants and workshops gathered for three days from September 15 (Sat.) to 17 (Mon.), was held in Nagato Yumoto Onsen, where tourism town development is underway. in this three-part event report, we will review the themes of the social experiment: the river, the road, and the night. We have looked back on the event, focusing on the topics of "River," "Road," and "Night.

The theme of this final issue is "the future. We spotlighted talk events held during the event to consider Nagato Yumoto's town development and efforts to connect the traditional "Hagiyaki Fukagawa Kiln" to the future.

Salon de Daneiji

It was the third day of Otosore River Festa 2018. The Shoin of Daneiji Temple was filled with lively voices.

The "Salon de Daneiji" was held on this day as an attempt to rediscover the charms of Nagato Yumoto through talks among those who gathered at Daneiji from inside and outside the region. This initiative was proposed last year as an idea to promote community development during the "Regional Tourism Planning College," a training camp workshop where university students and teachers from all over Japan gathered in Nagato Yumoto Onsen.

The theme of this year's event, the second following the one held in April this year, is "Thinking about the Future of Nagato Yumoto: Case Studies from the Tourism and City Planning Institute. Facilitated by Professor Susumu Kawahara of Tokyo Metropolitan University, this year's session will feature valuable case studies from the university's 10 years of research on tourism and urban planning, as presented by students.

First introduced on this day was a case study on how to utilize the skills of foreigners in local activities by utilizing WWOOF, a system for exchanging work, lodging, and meals with foreigners, and a case study on matching the expectations of foreign tourists with the responses of local communities and stores. The event provided an opportunity to think about the relationship between foreign tourists, who are expected to increase in the future, and Nagato Yumoto Onsen.

As an example of "event legacy," in which a large-scale event is utilized to revitalize the community afterwards, the past effects of the National Urban Greenery Fair (held this year in Yamaguchi Prefecture under the nickname "Yamaguchi Yume Hanahaku") on the community were introduced.

After these case studies provided topics for discussion, the free talk began.

Local residents who think about the future of the town, students who propose fresh ideas from outside perspectives, and expert members of the Nagato Yumoto Onsen Tourism and Town Development Design Council will share their thoughts from their respective perspectives.

This year's "Salon de Daneiji," in which participants had serious expressions on their faces but the atmosphere was friendly from start to finish, reached its scheduled time in no time at all.

The event ended with a round of applause for the students and a few words from one of the organizers, Yuta Akagawa, a young man from the Yumoto area.

After leaving Daneiji Temple, participants walked to the hot spring resort area where the "Otosori River Festa" was being held.

Looking at the scenery of the town, I couldn't help but think about what Nagato Yumoto could do. It was a fulfilling two hours of mutual stimulation.

Imagine the future

In a corner of the hot spring resort area, a booth was set up to introduce the future vision of Nagato Yumoto Onsen.

Construction work is still in progress around Onyu and the area where Hoshino Resort plans to expand, even while the event is being held. Suddenly stepping outside and looking over the hot spring resort area, I was excited to see how that place would turn out.

The "Autumn Leaves Staircase" and "Wild Geese Plaza" have already taken shape, and the hot spring resort is gradually moving closer to the future.

Some visitors were excited to see the changing city and said, "I am looking forward to my next visit.

Making bean-plate dishes to experience Hagi ware

The Fukagawa Kiln of Hagi ware was born more than 360 years ago as the official kiln of the Hagi Clan.

In conjunction with the Otosore River Festa, the Hagiyaki Fukagawa Kiln Young Men's Club members held a "bean plate making experience" at cafe & pottery Oto, a cafe with a Hagiyaki pottery gallery.

This is a unique opportunity to learn directly from the members of the youth club, who carry on the tradition of Hagiyaki pottery, about the procedures and tips. The participants faced the clay with serious expressions on their faces.

By cutting and shaping the clay to fit the mold, it gradually takes on the appearance of a vessel. The result is a one-of-a-kind bean dish.

The next challenge will be taken up by the children who came to the venue to play.

"What's next?" How do you use these tools?" The youth group members carefully answered each question as they worked together to create the project.

Impressive memories experienced on a trip are deeply etched in the mind. The month after the event, the baked bean plates were delivered to the participants, who must have become familiar with the important culture that remains in this region.

Naga Talk vol. 07" on the stage of riverbed

The three days of experiencing the future of the rivers, roads, and nights of Nagato Yumoto Onsen were finally coming to an end.

Around 40 people, mostly members involved in community development, gather around the riverbed at sunset.

The finale of the event will be "Naga Talk," in which we will hear from people who make the city interesting in their own style. This talk event started in March last year, and this is the seventh time it has been held.

The guest speaker this time was Mr. Masahito Okina of visionAreal, a Machibito company that plans and operates community cafes and plans and operates events mainly in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture.

The interviewer was Mr. Hideaki Izumi, the commander of the Nagato Yumoto Onsen Tourism Town Development Design Council, who himself was a guest on "Naga Talk" last May.

Ms. Okina calls people who live in a place of their own choosing, working around what they like and with people they like, "Machibito.

Born into a family of a Chinese restaurant that has been in the Kurume community for generations, he opened his own restaurant. As he launched events within the restaurant, the circle and scale of his activities gradually expanded, and the stage for his activities shifted from the restaurant to the "town" as a turning point. He is now involved in a variety of projects based on the concept of "connecting the town and people through events.

The soft, wry tone of the conversation and the occasional laugh.

Everyone is drawn into the world Okina-san tells about on the riverbed stage.

They will realize what they want to do, using their own town as a base. By gathering "Machibito" who complete such "own size" projects, the town will surely move in the right direction. Ms. Okina's "Naga Talk" was simple, but scattered with many words that resonated with me.

And before you know it, the sun has set and it is 19:00. Thus, the special three days to experience the future come to an end.

The warm lighting on the banks of the river was filled with the strong feelings of those who were thinking about the future.

Notice] "Naga Talk vol.08" Talking about Hagi Ware Fukagawa Kiln

The next "Naga Talk" vol. 08 will be held on Saturday, December 8 at 6:30 pm. The guest speaker will be Takao Tahara, a potter at Hagiyaki Fukagawa Kiln.

Mr. Tahara attended "Hagi Ware and the Tea Ceremony of the Tahara Tohei Family" held in Lyon, France this past November, where he introduced Hagi ware Fukagawa kilns and gave a demonstration and lecture on the tea ceremony. He will talk about the event in France, the deep relationship between Fukagawa Hagi ware and the tea ceremony, and his thoughts on his own creations.

On the same day, "cafe&pottery Oto," the venue for the exhibition, will open the "Tenohirano no keshiki '18" exhibition featuring sake cups, bean plates, small bowls, and more. Visitors can enjoy works by three artists from outside the prefecture in addition to those from Hagiyaki Fukagawa Kiln.

This is an opportunity for visitors to feel even more familiar with Hagiyaki Fukagawa Kiln through this valuable talk and the artworks.
