The virtual reality (VR) facility of the "Restoration Experience Pavilion," which was well received at the Yamaguchi Yumehana Expo last fall, was installed at the Murata Seifu Memorial Museum on Friday, March 1, 2012. Visitors can experience it for a fee of 50 yen (for a special eye mask) in addition to the admission fee.
The procedure is simple. Simply put on the eye mask, then the special goggles, and turn on the switch.
This VR allows visitors to travel back in time to Choshu at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate and experience famous scenes from the Bakumatsu Restoration (the Matsushita Village School, the Kozanji Raid, and the Choshu Five) through 3-D images.
The 360-degree viewers can enjoy the realistic images that make them feel as if they are in the very place where Matsushita Murajuku was built, and the scene of the raising of the army is so powerful that it makes the viewer involuntarily recoil.
Inside the museum, a new panel exhibit traces the history of the museum from the Meiji Restoration to the present, and a video introducing Seifu's achievements is also shown. Visitors can also see a panel of Nakahara Satoru, the first female doctor in Yamaguchi Prefecture, who was born in Misumi during the Meiji era (1868-1912).
The permanent exhibition introduces the achievements of Murata Seifu, a samurai from Misumi who is said to have laid the foundation for the Meiji Restoration by reforming the domain government, and Shufu Masanosuke, who succeeded to Seifu's wishes and restructured the domain's finances.
The display panels, which were renewed last January, feature a layout that makes use of cartoons. We hope you will take a look at them along with the VR.
