I couldn't resist the urge to paint.
Yasuo Kozuki was called up in April 1943 and assigned to the city of Hyrule in Manchuria (now northeastern China). After the war, he was interned in Siberia by the Soviet Army and did not return to Japan until 1947. The "Siberian Series" depicting memories of this war and internment in Siberia is Kozuki's masterpiece and a prayer for peace. Along with the "Siberian Series," this exhibition introduces the "Hyrule Correspondence," a letter from Hyrule to his family, and works depicting peaceful days spent in his hometown after the war. War had a tremendous impact on Yasuo Kagetsu's life. Let us explore how the artist lived in the midst of it, and touch on Kozuki's thoughts on peace.

Yasuo Kozuki (1911-1974)
He left a great mark on the world of modern Japanese Western-style painting. His experience of internment in Siberia after the war's defeat led him to create the "Siberian Series," which later became his best-known work. In his later years, he also created objects by reusing scrap wood from his surroundings. Until his death at the age of 62, he never left his hometown and continued to pursue his passion for creative activities. Nagisa Nakhodka, 1974, The Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art, Collection
