On Sunday, August 4, the Sweat Sweat (Kankan) Festa 2019, a three-hour mountain bike endurance race on the Thousand Tatami mats, was held.
This year marks the 26th time this midsummer festival has been held and has long been a favorite among participants. This year again, participants in the solo and team (2-4 people) divisions stood at the starting line at 10:00 a.m.
The start was by the rolling start method, and the first step was a one-lap parade run around the campsite. From the moment they stepped on the starting line again, the lead group jumped onto the course with rapid acceleration.
The special course, built between Senjojiki and Suganashida Park, is about 4,300 meters long per lap.
The ups and downs of the road are very steep, and we grit our teeth as we make our way up the road.
The most difficult part is a steep slope called "Gekizaka.
The more experienced ones were passing at speed, using their bikes as if they were their own limbs, while raising a cloud of dust.
The aid point is visible as you go up to the campground again.
Local children call out loudly as they cool off their burning bodies in the shower.
Water! Cucumbers! and "Cucumbers!
While receiving drinks, fruits and vegetables, "Thank you! were sent to the children.
The summit of Senjojiki is 333 meters above sea level.
The ride takes in a spectacular view of the sky, ocean, and even distant islands. There are also points along the way where logs are provided.
With the cheers of teammates and family members, overcoming obstacles is the last spurt.
The pit area was filled with shouts of "Good job!" and the riders were replaced and the race started again.
The athletes were sent off with applause and ran down from the campsite with all the strength they could muster in their pedals.
Also at the venue was a poster for the "Nagato Blue Ocean Ride with Akiyoshidai," a cycling event to be held in the city on Saturday, November 23 this year. Entry for this event started on August 1, and is still accepting participants.
We hope that many of you will enjoy the spectacular scenery of the next road trip by bicycle.
