Official camp site for the Canadian national team
Nagato City is the official camp site for the Canadian national team at the Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan.
On the evening of September 12 (Thursday), about 100 citizens and media gathered in front of Nagato City Hall for a welcome ceremony.
The participants hold a hand flag with the Canadian flag on it.
They also raised a large flag and welcomed the Canadian team with applause.
The head coach and three other staff members participated in the ceremony.
Mayor Onishi began his speech by saying, "The entire city will support the first match on September 26 (Thursday). For the first match against Italy to be held in Fukuoka, a citizens-only cheering bus tour is being planned from Nagato City.
Next, a miniature version of the original welcome board created by the children of Aburaya Elementary School this past March was presented. The board features 60 pictures drawn by the students with Canadian imagery, including flags, reindeer, maple syrup, and more.
Finally, to support the athletes with food from Nagato, JA Yamaguchi Prefecture's Nagato General Headquarters presented 50 kg of Choshu Nagato Wagyu beef, Fukagawa Chicken Farmers Cooperative Association presented 60 kg of Choshu chicken, and Yuya Tanada Landscape Preservation Society presented 300 kg of rice from the terraced rice fields.
The head coaches and staff members accepted the invitation with smiles and encouraged the participants to come and watch the game as well as the open practice, to which the participants responded by waving flags.
Open practice starts on Friday the 13th.
Tomorrow, Friday the 13th, the Canadian national team will begin open practice at the Tawarayama Multipurpose Exchange Plaza.
