The "Let's Walk Around Town with an Old Map in Your Hand," which was very popular last year, will be held again this year. will start again this year.

Four courses are available in Nagato City. Please note that each course has a different reservation destination, participation fee, and deadline.

The "Old Map Town Walk" is a guided walk where visitors can trace the history and explore the town with a local guide while viewing beautiful old maps produced by the Choshu Clan's cartographer.

Walking around the town with an old map in hand and thinking about the streets, townscapes, and people's lives in the past, you will feel like you are on a little time trip. We hope you will enjoy a "historical and romantic" walk through the town.

Old Map Walk, Dori

Tour of fishing town streets with kindness and humanity that lived together with whales

The Tong area of Qinghai Island is a fishing village with narrow alleys and rows of houses characteristic of traditional fishing villages, which evoke the original Japanese landscape.

With an old map in hand, the Kayoi Guide Association will take you on a tour of the village of old-style whaling, where whale culture, which lived on the sea and depended on whaling for its daily sustenance, still remains strong.

Old Map Walk, Senzaki

Tour of Senzaki, a port town that prospered as a port of call for Choshu and Kitaura whaling and Kitamae ships

Senzaki, Nagato City, was called Setozaki in the Edo period (1603-1867) and was a bustling port town.

In addition to being a fishing port for sardines and whales, it was also a port of call on the westbound route of Kitamae-bune, and commerce thrived there.

With an old map in hand, the Nagato Volunteer Guides' Association will lead you on a tour of the area to see what it must have looked like in those days.

Old Map Walk, Misumi

Origin walk of Seifu Murata and Masanosuke Shufu, who laid the foundation for the Meiji Restoration

Misumi, Nagato City, produced "Murata Seifu," who played a central role in the clan's political reforms and laid the foundation for the Restoration Kaiten, and "Shufu Masanosuke," who was a reformer in the clan and supported the aspirants at the end of the Edo period.

Local guides will take you to the places associated with the origin of local sages.

Old map walk, Tawarayama

Onsen ranking West Yokozuna-dono's tour of hot spring cures

During the feudal era, the northern route of the Akamaseki Highway connecting Hagi and Akamaseki was designated to go via Tawarayama Onsen in a roundabout way.

The Tawarayama Shittoru-kai will guide you, map in hand, through the streets of Tawarayama Onsen, a "therapeutic hot spring loved by the feudal lords," where records of successive feudal lords have visited.
