The Kayoi region of Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is an old fishing village located on the Sea of Japan coast. In the Kayoi area, whaling was done by hand using harpoons and nets about 400 years ago during the Edo period (1603-1867), when the Mori clan of Choshu was in power. People in fishing villages made graves, tablets, and past books for the whales they caught and prayed for their repose. Even today, once a year, a memorial service called "Whale Hui" is held at Mukigan-ji Temple to pray for the repose of the souls of the dead whales of the past and to express gratitude to the gods.
