Tawarayama Onsen is said to have been discovered by a white monkey, an incarnation of Yakushi Nyorai, in 916 A.D. (Engi 16), and was used as a therapeutic bath by the Choshu clan during the Edo period. Since its discovery, the onsen has continued to weave its history as a therapeutic hot spring for the local community, including being designated as a National Health Resort Hot Spring in 1981.
