Traditional festival in Dori district reenacting the old-style whaling

On Sunday, July 19, 2026, the Kayoi Kujira Festival was held in the Kayoi district of Nagato City. This traditional festival celebrates the area's history as a hub of traditional whaling during the Edo period, featuring events such as Japanese boat races and traditional whaling demonstrations.

This article presents photos of the traditional whaling demonstration, which recreates the whaling practices that flourished in the Kayoi district during the Edo period.

After the whale is hauled in, a "whale song" is performed in front of the Dori Whale Museum, which was sung during the memorial service for the whales caught.

The traditional whaling demonstration concluded with a performance of the Kujira-uta (whale song), expressing gratitude and mourning for the whales, bringing the festival to its finale.

The powerful demonstration combined with heartfelt gratitude and reverence for the whales created a memorable experience unique to the Kayoi Kujira Festival.
