A traditional festival with roots in the Edo period

The Senzaki Gion Festival was held at Yasaka Shrine in Senzaki, Nagato City, on Monday, July 20 and Sunday, July 26, 2026. On the festival’s first and final days, portable shrines (mikoshi) and Dashi Float processions set out, and local children perform as Kodomo Maiko. This article reports on the festival highlights.

Scenes from Monday, July 20

From around 4:00 PM, residents of Senzaki-dori Town gathered in front of Yasaka Shrine and prepared the Dashi Float and mikoshi.

After a short while, the Kodomo Maiko appeared and dedicated the first dance.

After that, the customary group photo was taken, and it was finally time to depart. Everyone in Imaura Town worked together to push the Dashi Float as they paraded through Senzaki.

During the Dashi Float procession, they stopped along the way to dedicate dances as they made their way toward Furu-Gion.

Upon arriving at Furu-Gion, the final dance was dedicated.

In addition, a festival fair was held at Yasaka Shrine, drawing a large crowd of visitors.

Scenes from Sunday, July 26

From around 4:00 PM, a mikoshi procession by Kajiya-cho (from Furu-Gion to Yasaka Shrine) took place.

Many visitors gathered for the festival fair, which began around 6:00 PM.

After the “Kujira Uta” (Whale Song) performed by students of Senzaki Elementary School, the Kodomo Maiko dedicated their dance.

After the Kodomo Maiko performance concluded, fireworks were launched at Senzaki Fishing Port.

Please look forward to next year's event!
