Omijima Island in Nagato City, Yamaguchi, is a scenic spot often referred to as the "Marine Alps" due to its numerous unique and mysterious rock formations, including sea caves, sheer cliffs, and stone pillars carved by nature in the surrounding waters. In this article, we introduce the "Omijima Scenic Model Course," which combines driving and cruise ships to ensure you fully experience these stunning views. We also provide information on how to enjoy the area even when time is limited, as well as details on nearby facilities.
This guide is useful for first-time visitors to Omijima Island as well as those looking to sightsee efficiently. Please use it as a reference for your trip.
Omijima Island is an island located on the north side of Nagato City in the Sea of Japan. It is directly connected to the mainland by the Omi Ohashi Bridge. You can enjoy the stunning views from the land via car and walking, and from the sea by using the "Omijima Cruise Ship," which departs from the same site as the "Roadside Station Senzakitchen" on the mainland side.
The following model course allows you to enjoy the spectacular views of Omijima Island from various angles.

For those who "don't have much time..."
Using the model course duration as a reference, you may choose to focus on either the "Omijima Cruise Ship" or the "Omijima Island Nature Trail" and plan a trip lasting from a few hours to half a day.

The Omijima Island Nature Trail is a walking path that starts within the grounds of the "Omijima Camping Village," as shown in the map above. (Click here for the Map PDF)
*Parking costs 500 yen per vehicle per entry.
The Nature Trail has two designated courses: Course A is the basic course taking about 40 minutes on foot, and Course B is a longer course that adds about 20 minutes to the Course A route.

There are observation points at key locations where you can enjoy views of the "Marine Alps." The appearance of the sea changes with the seasons:
• Summer: Calm waves and a transparent blue
• Winter: Strong whitecaps and a deep, heavy blue *Please be mindful of the wind and temperature during winter
These are the sights you can enjoy.

Along the way, you can also enjoy looking for seasonal flora: azaleas in spring (April–May), bellflowers in summer (July–September), silver-leaf sunflowers in autumn (October–November), and camellias in winter (January–February).
Also, when the Omijima Cruise Ship passes by, it's a great photo opportunity! Be sure not to miss it.

The "Omijima Cruise Ship" allows you to enjoy the scenery of the "Marine Alps" from the sea. Here, we provide information such as "where to board" and "how long it takes," along with tips for enjoying the experience.

The coastline of Omijima Island is lined with unique rock formations and sheer cliffs created by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan. By taking the cruise ship, you can enjoy the magnificent landscape woven by nature up close from the sea.
Furthermore, the boat travels along the northern coast of the island, approaching impressive spots one after another that cannot be seen from land, such as Kannon-dou, a massive sea cave, and "Zou-no-hana" (Elephant's Trunk), a rock arch resembling an elephant's trunk.
In particular, the experience of looking up at cliffs dozens of meters high from below is breathtaking. Accompanied by the guide's commentary, you will surely be moved by the natural beauty of Omijima Island.
While the Omijima Cruise Ship allows you to enjoy natural landscapes up close, it is important to note that it is easily affected by the season and weather. Especially in winter or on days when the Sea of Japan is rough, cancellations or course changes may occur due to waves and wind. Even in summer, operating conditions can change during strong winds or high waves, so it is crucial to check the weather forecast and official announcements on the day of your visit.
When sightseeing in Senzaki or Omijima Island by car, choosing a parking lot can be confusing. By resolving questions such as "Where is the most convenient place to park for sightseeing?", "Is there parking near the cruise ship?", and "When are the peak hours?" in advance, your travel and sightseeing on the day will be much smoother.
Here, we explain the parking information around the cruise ship and within Omijima Island, along with tips for avoiding crowds.
Recommended parking lots for driving around Omijima Island are as follows:

To avoid parking congestion, it is important to plan your schedule, time of day, and the order of your activities.
When using the parking lot at Roadside Station Senzakitchen, it is relatively easy to park on weekdays, but it often gets crowded around noon on weekends. Arriving early in the morning allows for relatively smooth parking. Since congestion is even more concentrated around noon during long holidays, it is also effective to drive around the island or visit observation spots first, then head to the port area at a different time.
Enjoy local gourmet food during your sightseeing in Senzaki and Omijima Island. Here are five recommended lunch spots you can stop by during your drive.
The appeal lies in the variety of options, including restaurants serving Nagato specialties like seafood and yakitori, as well as the "Grill House" where you can immediately BBQ items purchased at the market, in addition to bento boxes.
