The Ohama area, centered around Ohama Beach in Nagato City, Yamaguchi, attracts many travelers who want to enjoy camping near the sea due to its rich nature and pleasant climate.

In this article, we will explain the recommended campsites and surfing information you should know to fully enjoy camping in the Ohama area.

Recommended Campsites in the Ohama Area

There are multiple campsites in the Ohama area, each with its own unique appeal.

Therefore, to create special memories, it is important to understand the unique features of each campsite and plan your stay accordingly.

Here, we introduce Ocean BASE Kawashiri and Igami Seaside Park Auto Campground, which are particularly well-regarded in the Ohama area.

We have also compiled comments from users, so please use them as a reference.

Ocean BASE Kawashiri

Ocean BASE Kawashiri is a camping and glamping facility adjacent to Ohama Beach.

Name

Ocean BASE Kawashiri (formerly Oda Ohama Campsite)

Recommended Activities

At Ocean BASE Kawashiri, Ohama Beach is right nearby, allowing you to enjoy swimming in the ocean along with camping.

Additionally, glamping courses in cottages are available, allowing you to spend time with a more resort-like feel.

You can spend a special time fully enjoying summer activities, such as swimming in the beautiful emerald green sea during the day and enjoying a BBQ or stargazing at the campsite from evening onwards.

With convenient facilities for swimming such as hot showers (200 yen for 3 minutes) and changing rooms, you won't need to prepare large amounts of water yourself or change inside your car, which is a great advantage.

Reviews for Ocean BASE Kawashiri

The sea was right in front of us, and it was convenient because we could drive our car into the campsite. I heard it gets crowded with swimmers in August and costs 1,000 yen per day, but considering the location, it's worth paying. The only drawback is that it's hard to start a fire when the wind is blowing. There are cooking areas, toilets, a rest area for swimmers, a surf shop, and vending machines nearby, making it very convenient.

At Igami Seaside Park Auto Campground, you can enjoy camping at auto sites equipped with AC power outlets—a luxury not often found at other campsites—allowing you to relax in a premium outdoor space.

In addition to the auto sites, free spaces are available for regular camping, making it a great choice for those who want to use their own camping gear while still benefiting from excellent facilities.

The calm waters of Yuya Bay are right next to the campsite, and sea kayaking experience courses are offered. Those looking for a sense of adventure on the sea should definitely check it out.

Reviews for Igami Seaside Park Auto Campground

The view is outstanding. Since the sea is right in front of you, you can go fishing. I caught a marbled rockfish.

However, since it is by the seaside, you may need to be careful of the wind. It seems better to bring extra pegs.

The auto site plots are spacious and covered in grass. The manager doesn't disturb you unnecessarily during your stay. I received a Ramune soda at check-in by showing my Montbell card.

The local people were kind and gave me freshly caught fish and seaweed from the sea in front of us.

I was able to have a wonderful time.

3 Key Points to Note When Camping in the Ohama Area

Ohama Campsite in Nagato City, Yamaguchi. Several buildings can be seen on a small hill along the coast where the blue sea and sky stretch out.

In the Ohama area, you can mainly enjoy camping by the seaside, but there are several points of caution unique to coastal environments.

Here, we explain three points to keep in mind when camping in the Ohama area.

We also explain countermeasures, so those trying camping for the first time may find this useful.

Heatstroke

Seaside spots tend to have higher temperatures, partly due to the low elevation.

Furthermore, since there are fewer shaded areas compared to the mountains, we recommend taking thorough precautions against heatstroke.

Heat tends to build up inside tents in particular, so it is important to improve ventilation, such as by placing a fan at the entrance.

Strong Winds

Because there are few obstacles by the sea, strong winds can occur easily, and it is not uncommon for tents to be difficult to set up.

It is important to take advance measures to prevent your tent from being blown away, such as using wind shelters or preparing pegs designed for seaside use.

Since the wind also makes it easier for fires from bonfires or burners to flare up, be sure to manage any open flames with extra care.

Changeable Weather

Like the mountains, weather by the sea can change quickly, so always prepare rain gear even if it is sunny.

Deciding on an evacuation site in case the weather worsens will allow you to enjoy your camping trip with greater peace of mind.
