Guided tour of Nagato Yumoto Onsen

On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, the walk event "Nagato Yumoto Onsen Tour with Old Maps" was held at Nagato Yumoto Onsen. This event is regularly held as a walking tour of the hot spring resort area, guided by a local guide along with a special old map. (→Click here for details)

The event took place in Nagato Yumoto Onsen, one of the most popular hot spring resorts in Yamaguchi Prefecture, with a history of more than 600 years. This report provides an overview of the event.

A guided walk on an old map

The guided walk started from the main hall of "Daneiji Temple.

A local guide will talk about the history of Daneiji Temple, including its relationship with the Ouchi clan, which was a strong power in Yamaguchi during the Muromachi period, and the Mori clan, which ruled the Choshu domain during the Edo period, as well as the legend of the spring source of the Nagato Yumoto hot spring.

We were also able to visit the back side of the main hall and the archives, which are not open to the public.

Here at Daneiji Temple is known as the place where Lord Ouchi Yoshitaka died and the Ouchi clan perished. The graves of Lord Ouchi Yoshitaka and his vassals, as well as those of the Mori family's chief vassals of the Mori clan, line the temple, giving visitors a sense of the temple's deep history.

The guided walk leaves Daneiji Temple and heads for the hot spring resort area via the old Daneiji Temple pathway (Jizo pathway).

The "Mochitsuki Jizo" near the temple was built in the early Edo period by assembling natural stones, and is said to be beneficial for childbirth and marital bliss, as well as for health and longevity if the mortar is pounded with a prepared pestle as many times as the year.

In addition to the Edo period (1603-1867) hot spring resort and its historic buildings, the tour guides told us episodes from their childhood.

After arriving at Nagato Yumoto hot spring resort, we will visit "Sumiyoshi Shrine" and "Kouanji Temple" located behind "Onyu", a stopover hot spring.

At the end of the tour, we reached the Ondin River River Park.

Walking through the streets with an old map in hand
seems to bring to life the way things used to be.

Enjoy an experience that is like a journey through time.
