"I want to find the significance of Hagiyaki in traditional Japanese culture."

Today (Monday, May 27), the name of "Shinpei Sakakura XVI" was announced at the "Shinpei Sakakura Kiln," a Hagiyaki kiln in the Minose district of Nagato Yumoto.

The Hagiyaki potteries in the Minose area are called "Hagiyaki Fukagawa Kilns" and have a 367-year history since they were opened in 1657.

Masahiro Sakakura newly assumed the name "Shinpei Sakakura XVI. His father "Shinpei Sakakura XV" changed his name to "Ikkei Sakakura" on this occasion.

On this day, reports were made to the predecessors in front of the Buddha, followed by an address to the media.

Shinpei Sakakura XVI said of his future pottery making, "I would like to work freely, but in the process, I would like to find the significance of Hagiyaki in traditional Japanese culture by utilizing the techniques, traditions, and common sense that have been cultivated over the years. He also expressed his hopes for the future.

Mr. Kazuki Sakakura said, "We have been discussing it together for several years before we decided to take over the name this time. I took over the name when I was in my 20s and have been working on it with a rushed pace, but I think I will have more time to spare from now on. He also expressed his ambitions for his own future pottery production.

The person who witnessed the succession was Iwata Hojo (abbot) of Daneiji Temple. It was Iwata Hojo who suggested the name "Ikkei.

After the presentation of the succession of names, the media were given a tour of the workshop.

Shinpei Sakakura XVI is planning to hold an exhibition to unveil the successor to his name in March 2025 in various locations throughout Japan. Please look forward to it!
