The Senzaki Gion Festival is being held in the Senzaki district from today (Saturday, July 20, 2024) to Friday, July 26, 2024. This festival is organized by Yasaka Shrine, a Gion shrine in the area, and on the first and last day of the festival, a fair and Japanese dance performances will be held on the grounds of the shrine. This article reports on the first day of the festival.
At around 3:30 p.m., a dedication of Japanese dance was held on a float in front of the shrine. The Japanese dance was performed by local "child maiko" (apprentice geisha).
After the dedication, the portable shrine departs from the shrine and travels around Senzaki town.
After a short pause, "Whale Song" will be performed by the children of Senzaki Elementary School from 5:30 p.m.
The fair started after the whale song. The stalls were open in order from the first one that was ready.
At 6:00 p.m., Japanese dance will finally be performed for the public.
The fair, whale songs and dances will be held on Friday the 26th as well, so please come and join us.
