On the sandy beach of Niinohama, large evergreen perennial grasses called hama-yu (also known as hamaomoto) grow in clusters, usually at their best during the swimming season in July and August, and bloom with pretty white flowers. Hama-yu" is written "hama-kiwen" because its flowers hang down in white like cotton (yu). Flowers begin to open in the evening and are in full bloom at midnight. It produces more than a dozen fragrant white flowers at the end of a thick stem. This Hamayu is a plant that grows wild along the warm seashore, and since the northern limit of its habitat on the Sea of Japan side is Niinohama in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, it is not easy to see it further north. In 1956, this hamayu was designated as a prefectural natural monument.
