On Sunday, July 17, the "2022 Dori Whale Festival" was held for the first time in three years in the Dori (Kayoi) district of Aomi Island, Nagato City.
Here is a video of the old-style whaling demonstration.
Local residents of the Dori area and volunteers from the city and beyond gather and set sail in rowing boats to catch whales as the "Dori Whale Team.
The whales are not real whales, but whale-shaped boats, and are driven from a little offshore to the harbor by several boats.
When they drive it to the harbor, they thrust a harpoon into it.
Once the whale is netted, the climax of the show comes when the three men climb up to finish it off.
After the demonstration, the rowing boat and whale join together and pull up in front of the Whale Museum.
At the end of the event, local elementary school students and members of the "Whale Song Preservation Society" performed "Whale Songs (songs for the repose of whales)" in front of the Whale Museum.
