From September 17 (Fri.) to 27 (Mon.), Nagato Yumoto Onsen is holding the "Autumn of Utsuwa" event to experience the 360-year history of the Hagiyaki Fukagawa kiln and the culture of the tea ceremony.
In the "Sounose" district, a pottery community adjacent to the hot spring resort, "Sounose Pottery" was established in 1657 as a clan-authorized kiln, and has developed over a period of about 360 years. Following last year's exhibition, this year's "Autumn of Utsuwa" features works created by eight artists from five kilns in the Minose area.
The main venue was Onyu, a reconstructed drop-in hot spring that has become a symbol of Nagato Yumoto Onsen. On the first day, an opening event was held to explain the project to the press and provide information on the venue.
This event was sponsored by the Hagiyaki Fukagawa Kiln Promotion Council, an organization made up of potters in the Minose area, which was established in 2019 to pass on techniques, promote intergenerational exchange, and promote regional development. The theme of this year's exhibition was "Kisakko," and the participants were invited to enjoy various types of "coffee tableware," including those that are easy to incorporate into daily life and those with a strong artist's style.
The name of the artist is on the glass of the rest room at the Onyu, a drop-in bathhouse. To prevent the spread of infectious diseases, measures are being implemented at the entrance, such as wearing masks and calling for alcohol disinfection, as well as filling in contact information.
On display and for sale in the open, glass-enclosed space are coffee tableware made with traditional Fukagawa Hagi techniques and materials. Visitors can compare the characteristics of the artists of the five kilns and encounter a variety of works, from matcha bowls to coffee cups.

Tahara Tohei Kiln
Visitors to the opening were able to hear directly from Mr. Sakakura and Ms. Tahara about the characteristics of their work and how to use it, and even picked up a piece of vessels. This opportunity to hear the artists' voices in this way is a valuable cultural experience.
There will be a total of three venues: "Onyu" as the main venue, "Otosoredo" a souvenir shop, and "cafe&pottery Oto" a gallery cafe. These autumn cultural experiences unique to Nagato Yumoto Onsen will make your stroll more enjoyable and memorable.
Otosuri-do is located near the bamboo stairs connecting the parking lot of Nagato Yumoto Onsen and Onyu.
The building, which is familiarly known as a souvenir shop, has a gallery space with tatami mats.
In the space where a hanging scroll from the "Café Goya," which is also the theme of this project, is displayed in the tokonoma (alcove), visitors can see a larger, more artist-oriented work and experience a different kind of appeal of Fukagawa Hagi.
Cafe & Pottery Oto, a well-known gallery cafe in Fukagawa Hagi, is a new addition to this year's event.
The store, created by renovating a vacant house and filled with gentle breezes from the Onshin River, features cups, plates, and other pieces that are easy to incorporate into daily life.
One of the charms of this store is that you can enjoy our special coffee and cakes with Hagi ware cups and utensils. After strolling through the world of Fukagawa Hagi, it is recommended to take a breather while actually touching the vessels.
In summer, "Otosori River Festa" is held to enjoy time by the river, and in autumn, "Autumn of Utsuwa" is held to savor the culture of this region.
We hope you enjoy strolling through Nagato Yumoto Onsen, where you will encounter new discoveries as the seasons change.
