On March 10 (Tue), a completion ceremony was held to mark the completion of the "Ontou " (drop-in hot spring) and the adjacent "Ontou Shoku " ( restaurant), which had been under reconstruction as a new symbol of the Nagato Yumoto Hot Spring Resort.
At the completion ceremony, attended by about 50 people, a Shinto ritual was performed by Naruse, the chief priest of Nagato Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi Shrine, and the inn, construction workers, and local residents offered a tamagushi (sacred skewer) in turn.
At the subsequent dedication ceremony, Kazuhiro Otani, co-chairman of Nagato Yumori Corporation, the owner, said, "We have completed a space with a sense of unity rooted in the community, respecting its history and location. We hope to work together to enhance the value of the community so that it will become a hot spring that is loved by the community," he said.
Mayor Ehara, who attended as a guest of honor, said, "Thanks to the efforts of all of you who have the passion and the ability to do things, we have completed a facility that will be a treasure for the community. We would like to continue our support for the revitalization of the hot spring resort.
In addition, on behalf of the design and construction contractors, certificates of appreciation were presented to the design firm Oka Shohei and Yamane Tekko Kensetsu K.K., respectively. Masahiro Yamane, president of Yamane Tekko Kensetsu K.K., said, "The construction of the hot spring, which gushes powerfully from the bedrock, was very challenging. We are grateful for the cooperation of everyone in the community and proud to have been involved in the Onyu, which will become a symbol of Nagato Yumoto Hot Springs," he said in his acknowledgments.
The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, after which attendees toured the newly renovated Onyu.
Located directly above the source of the spring, Onyu is a rare hot spring facility in Japan where visitors can bathe while gazing at the hot spring water gushing from the bedrock.
In addition, the "Onyu Shoku" restaurant building was completed across the street from Onyu.
This restaurant offers dishes featuring Nagato City's specialty "Choshu-dori" (Choshu chicken) and fresh pressed tofu, as well as seasonal seafood and seasonal vegetables. In addition to in-restaurant dining, a take-out menu is also available, adding color to your stroll through the hot spring district.
With the completion of both facilities in the main area of Nagato Yumoto Onsen, both overnight guests and day-trip visitors will be able to enjoy the area as a hot spring resort where they can experience the local hot springs, food, scenery, and culture. We hope you will take your takeout menu in hand and go out to the river terrace or plaza to enjoy the charms of the town," said Otani-san and Ito-san, co-presidents of Nagato Yumoto Yumori Co.
Finally, this spring, Nagato Yumoto Onsen will undergo a renewal.
On-yu", a drop-in hot spring, and "On-yu Shoku", a food and beverage building, will open on Wednesday, March 18, 2012.
Designed by Shohei Oka, who is known for his work on the architecture of "Fushozan Onsen" in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, "Onyu" is a one-story structure with traditional Japanese stylistic beauty and a rustic appearance made of plenty of wood. The bathtub, in which visitors can see the hot spring water gushing from the bedrock, features a traditional one-meter deep bath that promotes blood circulation and helps relieve swelling and sensitivity to cold.
The attached rest area is an open space with glass walls on three sides. Visitors can enjoy cold beer and soft-serve ice cream while gazing at the Onshin River flowing through the center of the hot spring resort area.
