On Tuesday, November 26, "Chomei Juku," a meeting to think about Nagato's tomorrow, was held at the Nagato City Products Tourism Center, attended by about 20 people from inside and outside the city.
As part of the activities of the Nagato Central Community Center, each time this meeting spotlights a person active in Nagato City or a new initiative to deepen learning. The lecturer this time was Etsuro Murao, a member of the Nagato City Regional Development Cooperation Volunteers in charge of tourism.
The Regional Development Cooperation Corps is a program that actively accepts human resources from outside the region to work in areas where the population is declining or aging rapidly. Mr. Murao was appointed in May 2017 and is working hard under the support of the Nagato City Tourism and Convention Association.
The title of this year's lecture was "I want to bring the community to life through words! Mr. Murao talked about the challenges of his local media company, Nagatoto.
In her first and second years, Ms. Murao's main focus was on providing support for tourist information and disseminating tourist information. While involved in the management of the Nagato City tourist website "NANAVI," he listened to the voices of tourists and worked on the creation of the Motonosumi Shrine information map and the "Nagato Pocket Map.
In the third and final year, we will launch the local media "Nagatoto.
The website went live in February 2019 and the free paper began publication in April 2019. To date, a total of seven issues have been published once a month, reaching a growing circle of readers in the city and beyond.
Everyone loves Nagato and seems to be enjoying their lives, but there is no medium to convey that feeling. The "awareness" that Mr. Murao gained through the activities of the Regional Development Cooperation Volunteers was the catalyst for the birth of "Nagato.
Nagato" is "Nagato with" in Chinese characters and "Nagato with" in English. Nagato with" is the Japanese word for "Nagato" in kanji, and "Nagato with" in English.
The trick to planning is to find something you like.
The interview begins with a "favorite" - a taste you have had since childhood, a place that has always been close to you. As we talk with people involved in the project and delve into their backgrounds, this eventually leads to mutual affection and pride for the region.
What is depicted in "Nagato" is the "love" of such people.
So far, "tastes" that have long been loved by the community include "Momoya Shokudo's Meat Rice," which graced the cover of the first issue of the free paper, the long-established yakitori restaurant "Komori" and "Ajihei" which has a store on the street in front of Nagato City Station.
Also, activities and places rooted in the community, such as the "Cheokaijima Republic," a community organization in the Cheokaijima area, and "Cafe bliss point by the sea" in the Tateishi area of Aburaya, are introduced with photos and articles that even convey the personalities of the representatives and store owners.
When interviewed, Mr. Murao says that he speaks of "dreams" regardless of age.
She is encouraged by the positive words, "I like Nagato, so I want to do this, don't I?
And projected on the screen were pictures filled with the smiling faces of local residents. Perhaps it was Mr. Murao's "love" that brought out the smiling faces of the local residents. It was an hour of cheerful smiles as he spoke, and we could feel his love for Nagato City.
In closing, Mr. Murao said, "I want more people to know about 'Nagatoto' as a local media in the city. And eventually, I would like to create an "editorial department" with people who provide topics and people who share their stories with us, in a loose cooperative relationship.
You can see a different face of Nagato City on "Nagatoto" than on "Nanavi," the official tourism site of Nagato City. Please take a look at the articles full of love, as if you can feel the "breath" of this city.
