On January 19 (Sun), the " Dainichi Dondoyaki," a traditional event that has continued for over 200 years, will be held in the Dainichi district of Aomi Island.
Dondoyaki" is a fire festival to pray for a good catch of fish, a good harvest, and good health by burning decorations, kadomatsu, and the first calligraphy piece of the New Year.
Dondondo" in the Ohihi area is made by assembling a huge yagura made of rafters, bamboos, and ferns, and attaching decorations collected from each household, such as shimekari (decorations for the New Year's ritual) and shomeshome (the beginning of a new year's calligraphy) around it.
This is an event in which the New Year's men and women light a "Dondon" and predict their fortune for the year according to the direction in which the "Dondon" falls.
It is said that if it falls on the ocean side, it will bring a good catch, if it falls on the mountain side, it will bring a good harvest, and if it falls in the middle, it will bring both a good catch and a good harvest. It is also said that burning the first calligraphy piece on the fire of "Dondon" will improve one's handwriting.
Please come and see the powerful 8-meter-high Dondoyaki with your own eyes.
