(Photo taken June 24, 2016) As of June 24, 2016 (Heisei 24), the water level in the Higashi Ushirobata Tanada (Higashi Ushirobata Rice Terraces) is at about 90%. The rice in the terraced paddy field to the right of the observatory is growing lushly. The terraced rice fields to the left of the observatory have begun to be watered! However, there is a possibility that they may not be watered any more. From now on, we will be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery of both the freshly watered terraced rice fields and the terraced rice fields that have turned green with growing rice plants! The "Higashi Gobata Terraced Rice Paddies" are one of the most spectacular spots in the country where you can see fishing fires and sunsets at the same time. The best time to see the fishing fire and the rice paddies is from late April to June every year. Terraced rice paddies" are rice paddies built in a stepped pattern on steep slopes. Many terraced rice paddies have been formed in Yamaguchi Prefecture, where mountainous areas account for 70% of the prefecture's land area. Nagato City's Aburaya is also an area with many such terraced rice paddies, with a large terraced rice paddy field area of approximately 700 ha centered on the Mukozugu Peninsula, the northernmost tip of Honshu (Honshu's westernmost island). In 1999, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries selected the terraced rice paddies in the Higashi Gobata district of Aburaya as one of the "100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan" out of 134 terraced rice paddies in 117 cities, towns, and villages in Japan at that time. Terraced rice paddies are usually located in mountainous areas, but in this area, the hills on the peninsula extend close to the coast, offering a view of the Sea of Japan below. Shooting conditions
On Saturday nights, when the weather is bad, many people do not go fishing, so there are fewer fishing fires. Fishing fires become more frequent from mid-May. Not all terraced rice paddies are flooded. The reflection condition of the rice paddies changes from June onward as the rice grows. After September, the fishing grounds gradually move out to sea, and the fishing fires become more distant.
