As of May 6, 2016 (Heisei 28), the "Terraced Rice Paddies of Higashi Ushirobata" are about 60% full of water. The "Higashi Ushirobata Rice Terraces" are one of the most spectacular spots in the country where you can see fishing fires and sunsets at the same time. The best time to view the fishing fire and paddy fields is from late April to June each year. Terraced rice paddies" are rice paddies built in a stepped pattern on steep slopes. Many terraced rice paddies have been formed in Yamaguchi Prefecture, where mountainous areas account for 70% of the prefecture's land area. Nagato City's Aburaya is also an area with many such terraced rice paddies, with a large terraced rice paddy field area of approximately 700 ha centered on the Mukozugu Peninsula, the northernmost tip of Honshu (Honshu's westernmost island). In 1999, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries selected the terraced rice paddies in the Higashi Gobata district of Aburaya as one of the "100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan" out of 134 terraced rice paddies in 117 cities, towns, and villages in Japan at that time. Terraced rice paddies are usually located in mountainous areas, but in this area, the hills on the peninsula extend close to the coast, offering a view of the Sea of Japan below.
