As of May 6, 2016 (Heisei 28), the best time to see the Tawarayama Shakunage-en has passed, but if you walk to the top, you will find some late-blooming varieties still in bloom in some places. Local volunteers will be selling local specialties and offering coffee and tea until May 8! (Since the late Tetsuo Kanekawa fell in love with a potted shakunage he came across in a supermarket around 1970 and decided to plant it, he has continued to plant it steadily in the hills behind his house and in fallow fields. Tawarayama Shakunage-en was the first organization in Yamaguchi Prefecture to win the grand prize in the 11th "Flower Tourist Attraction Creation Awards" sponsored by the Japan Tourism Association!
