On Wednesday, November 11, the fifth and sixth sessions of the "Nagato Tourism Concierge" seminar, a program to develop human resources capable of providing the unique hospitality of Nagato City, were held.
The lecturer was Teruki Imaoka, professor emeritus at Yamaguchi University and president of the Yamaguchi Geological Society. He spoke about the appeal of Nagato from the perspective of geology.
The lecture began with an easy-to-understand explanation of the basics of geology, comparing it to land in Nagato City and other parts of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Then, he talked about the attractiveness of Aomi Island, where one can see remarkable volcanic activity from about 90 million years ago.
Mr. Imaoka said of Qinghai Island, "Nagato is a rare place where you can see the underground structure of a caldera about 90 million years old by boat (Qinghai Island Sightseeing Steamship). This alone can be a tourism attraction that attracts people from abroad. He appealed to the visitors.
The lecturer for the 6th seminar was Mr. Tomoaki Tadachi, abbot of Nison-in, a temple in the Aburatani and Mukatsuku areas. The talk centered on the legend of Yang Kwei-Hee that remains at Nison-in.
The lecture began with the history of Mukoujingu, which functioned as a "gateway from the continent. He reiterated the legend that Yang Kwei-Hui, the favorite of Emperor Xuanzong during the Tang Dynasty, arrived from the continent and was buried at Nison-in Temple, which was then called "Tenkei-ji Temple.
We also heard about the "Nison-butsu (Shakyamuni Buddha/Amida Buddha)," from which the "Nison-in" got its name, including the rarity of "two principal images" and the historical value of the principal images themselves.
