Hanadura

"Hanadura," one of the "Eight Views of Senzaki" by Misuzu Kaneko

This is a small rock island with a height of 20 meters and a hole of approximately 8 meters in diameter. It is said that the name "Hanadura," means the nose of a cow, and that this is because Susano-no-mikoto, who held his beloved child in his arms and looked out over Korea, was said to have had difficulty leaving the island. Misuzu is said to have recited this story and felt a deep sense of nostalgia as she herself gazed at the sea burning in the setting sun. Although the poem is a bit sad, it conveys Misuzu's feelings.

Poem by Misuzu Kaneko

Hanadura, Kaneko Misuzu
I was looking at Hanadura, on the beach and heard
“Once upon a time, once upon a time”
Every time I see Hanadura, on the beach,
I feel nostalgic
.
Once upon a time, once upon a time,” said
of Hanadura,
the place of that name.
I wonder where the little old man at the post office is
doing.
That Hanadura, no
Hanadura, kyoketsu,
O-bune wa tomochi
has disappeared.
Even now, the sea burns at sunset.
Even now, the boat goes offshore.
It’s “Once upon a time, once upon a time.”
Hanadura, yo,
everyone is once upon a time.
