Poem by Misuzu Kaneko

Your heart
is big and mature, but
your mother’s
heart is small.
Because, she said,
I am small and full of myself.
I am a small child, but
my small
heart is big.
Because, my big mother said,
don’t be full yet,
because I think about many things.
