Ancient temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism
This is an old Shingon sect temple located in the countryside about 2 km east of Tawarayama Onsen. It is said to have been founded in 806 by Kobo Daishi on his return from Tang Dynasty China. Climbing the stone steps, you will see the brightly colored vermilion temple gate, the main hall, and the hall of treasures. The ceiling paintings in the main hall, depicting flowers and birds, are said to be by Sesshu, and the treasure hall contains a standing wooden statue of the Bodhisattva Sacred Kannon. On the mountain behind the temple, there is a cluster of giant shinoki trees, and the inner sanctuary is enshrined at the top of the mountain, making it one of the 88 sacred places on the New Shikoku Island.
