Origin of "Natsumikan," a specialty of Yamaguchi Prefecture
The original natsumikan tree is located in Ohihi, Qinghai Island. There are various theories as to its origin, but the most common theory is that in the middle of the Edo period (18th century), an island girl, Nishimoto Cho, picked up a fruit that had washed up on the beach and planted it, and the seed grew into a bud. Later, it came to be widely cultivated for food, and was planted in the Hagi Castle area, where it has flourished as a specialty product.
The white flower with a faint fragrance is the prefectural flower.
In 1927, it was designated as a national historic site and a natural monument.

In 1981, in order to protect the original tree, the Hagi Citrus Experiment Station of Yamaguchi Prefecture at that time cut branches of the original tree, brought them back to the experiment station, took cuttings, and planted them. In 2008, with the abolition of the Hagi Citrus Experiment Station, a branch tree of the original tree (with DNA from the pure original tree) was taken over by Nagato City and is now transplanted near the original tree.
