Abandoned terraced rice paddies are given a new lease of life
Until the 1950s, the area around the Mukozugu Peninsula in Aburatani, Nagato City, was covered with about 25,000 terraced rice paddies. However, due to a combination of factors such as inadequate compensation for the production labor in the terraced rice paddies, aging population, lack of successors, and depopulation, the number of abandoned rice paddies has been increasing year by year, and the devastated terraced rice paddies have changed the landscape of the satoyama of the past. Therefore, in order to utilize the terraced rice paddies and create a vibrant community where people thrive together with nature, we will start cultivating abandoned rice paddies in 2019. Various commercialization efforts are being made through the "Hanadan of Terraced Rice Paddies."
