Kakunoshima Bridge (Shimonoseki City)

It is one of the most scenic spots in Japan, winning first place in the "Japan Bridge Ranking" selected by TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel review site.
Stretching straight out toward the cobalt blue sea, it looks like a foreign resort.
The bridge, which spans 1,780 meters in length, opened in November 2000.
It is one of the longest bridges over remote islands in Japan that can be crossed free of charge as a public road.

Industrial Revolution Heritage of Meiji Japan (Hagi )

World Cultural Heritage (UNESCO)

In July 2015 (Heisei 27), 23 facilities, mainly heavy industrial facilities from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, were registered as World Heritage sites as "Industrial Revolutionary Sites of Meiji Japan.
Five of these assets, including the Hagi Reverberatory Furnace and Shoin Shrine in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, are registered as its constituent assets!

Hagi Reactor

A metal melting furnace for ship's guns, etc., believed to have been operated on a trial basis in 1856. Made of basalt and bricks, it is 11.5 m high and exists only in two places: Shizuoka Prefecture and Hagi.

Shipyard ruins

The remains of a shipyard established by the Hagi Clan in 1856. Two Western-style sailing ships, Heishinmaru and Koshinmaru, were built at the end of the Edo period. This is the only shipyard whose remains can be confirmed as having been built at the end of the Edo period.

Oita-yama Tatara
Steelmaking site

The site of an Edo period ironworks that made iron from iron sand by burning charcoal; operated three times between the 1750s and 1860s. The main remains such as the former shed and the high hall are well preserved.

Hagi Castle Town

Hagi Castle Town is highly regarded as an asset that represents the politics, administration, and economy of the local community at the end of the Edo period, when Japan was striving for industrialization.

In spring, cherry blossoms turn the castle town pink.

Shoukasonjuku (under the ritsuryou system)

A private school run by Yoshida Shoin, a pioneer of the Meiji Restoration, from 1857 to 1858. Many of the students who inherited Shoin's teachings played an important role in the modernization and industrialization of Japan.

In the 8-mat room that used to be a lecture room, there is a plaster statue of Shoin, his portrait, and a desk.

Akiyoshido Cave (Mine City)

National Special Natural Monument

Located at the foot of the southern side of Akiyoshidai, this is one of the largest limestone caves in Japan, and has been called "Takiana (waterfall hole)" by the local people since long ago.
The waterfall hole was designated as a national natural monument in March 1922, and in May 1926, the then Crown Prince (later Emperor Showa) saw the hole and named it "Akiyoshi-Do.

The height and width of the cave mouth reach 24 m and 8 m, respectively. The widest part of the cave is 200 m, the highest part of the ceiling is 40 m, and the highest part reaches 80 m. Akiyoshidai (Mine City)

Akiyoshidai was born as a coral reef in the distant sea long ago, and about 350 million years later, it became a karst plateau, a limestone plateau with well-developed dolines and limestone caves. The elevation of the plateau surface ranges from 180 to 420 m. It is a basin-like plateau surrounded by a mountain range of 500 to 600 m. The basement of the plateau is littered with numerous limestone caves that have been eroded by rainwater.
