Chelmon rostratus (species of bristletooth mussel)
On May 19, 2016 (2016), we had a large outbreak of chestnut mussels!
Divers were very excited to see so many chestnutback mussels filling the surface of the ocean. This is the first time since 2013 that such a large population has appeared. Among them, a small number of the previously introduced "Yasagatahadakakamegai" also made an appearance. This "Yasagata Hadakamegai" preys on the "chestnutback mussel! There are different types of mussels, including those with shells inside their bodies, like the chestnutback mussel. There are two types of mussels: those with shells inside their bodies, such as the chestnutback mussel, and those with shells inside their bodies that have degenerated during the evolutionary process, called the naked turtle mussel. If you compare the photos carefully, you may be able to tell the difference. Chelmon rostratus (species of bristletooth mussel) The bluefin mussel is a popular dive site on Qinghai Island, where photo divers are anticipating another sighting of this rare deep-sea creature in the future!
Qinghai Island Diving Spots
Aomi Island, Kita-Nagato Kaigan National Park, Yamaguchi PrefectureDiving is possible in this area. On days when the southerly winds blow strongly in this area, a phenomenon called "Yushoryu" (upwelling current) occurs, causing the seawater in the coastal area and the deep offshore seawater to switch places. This current rarely causes deep-sea creatures to wander into the coast of Qinghai Island. For this reason, the island is one of the most popular diving spots in Japan for photo divers, who take pictures of underwater creatures.
