Hamayu at Nijinohama

Large evergreen perennial grasses called hamaomoto (also known as hamaomoto) grow in clusters on the sandy beach and usually bloom with pretty white flowers during the swimming season in July and August.

Flowers begin to open in the evening and are in full bloom at midnight.
It produces more than a dozen fragrant white flowers at the end of a thick stem.
This Hamayu is a plant that grows wild along the warm seashore, and since the northern limit of its habitat on the Sea of Japan side is Niinohama in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, it is not easy to see it further north.
In 1956, this hamayu was designated as a prefectural natural monument.

Legend of Nichino-hama

It is said that the Heike side was defeated in the battle of Dannoura between the Genpei clan and the Taira clan, and that Nijinono-no-Nokochi, holding the young Emperor Antoku in her arms, threw herself into the sea, where her corpse was washed up on this beach by the Kuroshio Current.
From there, it came to be called Niinohama.
