A traditional festival that has continued for 400 years in the Higashifukagawa district of Nagato City

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, the Akasaki Festival was held at Akasaki Shrine in the Higashi-Fukagawa area. This traditional festival has been succeeded by local residents for more than 400 years. It started around 1596, when people dedicated their gratitude to Akasaki Shrine, which enshrines the god of agriculture, in the form of performing arts.

Dedication of traditional performing arts

Kabuki", "Raku Odori" and "Yumoto Nanjo Odori" were dedicated at the "Akasaki Shrine Raku-Janjiki", a nationally designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property. Here are some photos of the dedication.

Kabuki "Sanbaso

Shomyo-shi Shiki Sanbaso" was performed on a special stage next to the Raku-janshiki.

Gakudori, the music and dance of the moon

Raku Odori," a traditional dance of the region, is dedicated to the god.

Yumoto Nanjo Odori," a traditional dance of Nagato Yumoto Onsen, was also performed.

Gakudori "Toranokodori" features fast gong rhythms and dancing.

Nagato Japanese Drum Orchestra "Shomon

The Nagato Wadaiko (Japanese drum) orchestra "Shomon," which performed for the first time, also dedicated a Wadaiko performance.

Tawarayama KABUKI Club

The Tawarayama KABUKI Club, performing for the first time, presented "Kotobuki Gonin Sanbaso.

Stalls around the venue

The area around the venue was crowded with stalls and kitchen cars.

At the end of the festival, a mochi-maki (rice cake throwing) ceremony was held, which was very exciting.

It was a day of lingering summer heat, but
all the performers danced as best they could.

The festival provided an opportunity to experience various traditional performing arts passed down in the community.
