From the Opening of the Country to the End of the Edo Period. Shobei Takeuchi, a Choshu Clan Soldier Who Ran Through the Upheaval

Until March 31, 2024 (Mon.), "Shobei Takeuchi, a Choshu clan samurai born in Misumi, Nagato City" exhibition is being held at the Murata Seifu Memorial Museum in Misumi District.

This exhibition focuses on Murata Seifu's nephew, Takeuchi Shobei, a samurai of the Choshu domain, under the theme of "People Surrounding Seifu. Takeuchi Shobei was one of the "Kinoe Nejunan Juichi Resshi" (*), who were executed for fighting among factions of the Choshu domain at the end of the Edo period. Until now, no detailed book on Shobei's history had been discovered, but with the cooperation of Yamaguchi University, the Hagi Museum, and Shobei's descendants, research and collection have been conducted, leading to this exhibition. The exhibition traces the history of the Choshu clan from Shobei's perspective, beginning with the arrival of Perry and the opening of Japan to the outside world, the Bakan War and other conflicts with other countries, and the internal struggles within the Choshu clan.
We hope you will visit the exhibition.

Other Highlights

After experiencing the history that laid the foundation for the Meiji Restoration, please stop by "Misumi Sanso," Seifu's former residence, which Seifu loved and Shobei Takeuchi is believed to have dropped by. It is as if a scene from those days comes to mind.
