Notice of "Dainichi Dondoyaki" in 2008

On January 21 (Sun.), "Doneyaki" will be held in the Dainichi district of Aomi Island, Nagato City. Dondoyaki is a traditional January event to pray for a good catch, a good harvest, and good health. The "Dondon" of Dainihibi is a huge 8-meter-high structure built from the foundation "Taruki" and the framework "Moso-dake", using household ornaments and a large amount of ferns. It is said that the direction in which this Dondon falls while burning will predict the year's bountiful catch and harvest*. There is also a legend that burning the first calligraphy piece on the fire of Dondondono "makes your handwriting better".

(*) It is said that the ocean side has a good catch and the mountain side has a good harvest, and the area between the mountain and the ocean has both a good catch and a good harvest.
