As of April 28, 2016 (Heisei 28), the best time to see the Tawarayama Shakunage Garden has passed, but if you walk to the top, you will see that late-blooming varieties are beginning to bloom. Local volunteers will be selling local specialties and offering a coffee corner until May 8! (Since the late Tetsuo Kanekawa fell in love with a potted shakunage he came across in a supermarket around 1970 and decided to plant it, he has continued to plant it steadily in the hills behind his house and in fallow fields. Tawarayama Shakunage-en was the first organization in Yamaguchi Prefecture to win the grand prize in the 11th "Flower Tourist Attraction Creation Awards" sponsored by the Japan Tourism Association!
