Social experiment underway on roads in hot spring resort area
From August 8 (Thu.) to August 31 (Sat.), a social experiment is being conducted in Nagato Yumoto Onsen, where a tourist town development project is underway, on a road on the left bank of the river lined with stores and inns.
This time, benches and planters will be installed along the narrowed road, and the design and maintenance will be verified to make it a more "walkable spa resort.
Planters separated the space for cars and pedestrians during the Otosore River Festa 2018, which was held during the social experiment last year. After the social experiment, the planters were changed from wooden to steel this time, taking into account weight, which was cited as an issue.
The planter with the logo of Nagato Yumoto Onsen blends in with the landscape of the hot spring resort, but has a more modern, futuristic feel. It may become one new photo-worthy spot.
Sitting on a bench, one can see the "Onshin River" flowing in front of one's eyes.
In the back is a "kawadoko" (riverbed), where it is comfortable to take a break in the summer while listening to the murmuring of the river.
In order to realize a walkable spa resort, various signs have been temporarily installed in this social experiment, such as those to control vehicle passing speeds and to warn people against illegal parking.
A.side drink in hand
Walking toward the upper reaches of the Otonoshin River, we saw a long, wide bench.
This is the location where the largest scale constriction section has been established in this social experiment.
This summer, even though the first day of autumn has passed, the weather is still hot.
Across from the bench is the take-out kitchen "A.side. This store opened last September in a renovated warehouse of a local grocery store, Arakawa Foods, and sells pita bread, zenzai (sweet bean soup), drinks, and other items depending on the season.
On this day, we were served a special "Yuzukichi Cider" made with Nagato Yuzukichi, a fragrant acid citrus produced in Nagato City, which will be in season soon.
A visually refreshing drink that will make you forget about the heat will go down your throat.
These casual stops make strolling around a hot spring resort town much more enjoyable.
