Higashi Ushirobata Terraced Rice Fields

Fishing lights of squid fishing boats shine on the Sea of Japan at sunset.

In 1999, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) selected the Higashi Gobata area of Aburaya as one of the "100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan" among 134 rice terraces in 117 cities, towns, and villages in Japan. Terraced rice paddies are usually located in mountainous areas, but in this district, the hills on the peninsula are close to the coast, so the view of the Sea of Japan can be seen below.

Shooting conditions

Watering Late April to mid-May
Rice planting Mid to late May
Fishing fire Around mid-May to early August
*This is only a guideline.
  • In recent years, fishing fires begin to increase in June.
  • After September, the fishing grounds move offshore and the fishing fires become more distant.
  • On Saturday nights and in bad weather, there are fewer fishing fires because many people do not go out to fish
