Yasuo Kagetsu, one of the leading postwar Japanese Western-style painters, is widely known for his "Siberian Series," which depicts his own experience of internment. At the same time, he also painted people, mainly family members. As his painting style changed, his expression shifted from depicting what he saw to stylizing forms and monochromatic colors.
In this exhibition, you can see the changes in expression and the impression that color gives, with "portrait," "form," and "movement" as keywords.

Exhibits

constantly changing one’s way of painting

On September 6 (Sun), the exhibition “The Expression of Yasuo Kagetsu – People -” opened at the ” Yasuo Kagetsu Museum of Art ” in the Misumi district of Nagato City.

This exhibition focuses on works in which “people” appear in Kozuki’s works.

Visitors will be able to see the transition of painting styles with the keywords of “portrait,” “form,” and “movement.

portrait

First, you will see works from the pre-war period, from the student years to the 1940s.

This period was also a time when Kougetsu was searching for his own style of painting, and it is evident that he was influenced by various painters.

The artist has captured the features of the figures in great detail and painted them in vivid colors.

form

Next, spanning two floors, you will see works from the 1950s.

This is considered to be a turning point for Kogetsu, in which the human form is emphasized more than the portrait element.

It is also noteworthy that the number of colors is kept to a minimum.

movement

The last works you will see are from the 1960s onward.

Having arrived at the expression of black, Kagetsu paints silhouette-like figures.

At first glance, the paintings do not contain much information, but one can sense the movement of people, their conversations, and the background.

Other Highlights

This exhibition also includes documents and manuscripts that show the path taken to complete the work.

Materials drawn on scraps of campus

Some of the materials depicted on scraps of the campus are being presented for the first time at this exhibition.

The “grandfather” material, which has two overlapping pieces of the campus, cannot be peeled off one at a time, so they do not know what is painted underneath.

In addition, many of the objects in the permanent exhibition also feature “people” in accordance with the “people” in the exhibition content.

Kougetsu’s favorite objects to paint are also represented as objects made from scrap wood.

According to the curator, “Since painters often work alone, they may have had a yearning for circuses and bands that work in teams.

Please take note of the cuteness of the objects that capture a moment of human movement.

This exhibition shows how the style of painting changes over the years through the works in which “people” appear.

The background and events of Kougetsu’s life are displayed in a very easy-to-understand manner by comparing them with his works.

We hope that this exhibition will allow visitors to feel the splendor and warmth of Kougetsu’s expression even more.

Message from the Curator

The key point of this exhibition is that the expression differs according to the age of the work.

Please pay attention to the background and the process of completing the work.
