Senzaki Gion Festival (2026)

This traditional festival has been held since the Edo period at Yasaka Shrine (Gion Shrine) in Senzaki, Nagato City, which prospered as a center of fishing and commerce. The festival takes place over a week in late July every year, with omikoshi (portable shrine) and Dashi Floats appearing on the first day and the last day of the festival. On the first day, the omikoshi is moved from Yasaka Shrine on the south side of Senzaki Street to Susaki Shrine (commonly known as "old gion") near the northern end of the town, and returns to Yasaka Shrine on the last day. Local children perform "Kodomo Maiko" (children's dances) on the Dashi Floats. A fair will also be held on the grounds of the shrine in conjunction with the appearance of the floats.

(*Omikoshi and Dashi Floats will appear on July 20 (Mon.) and July 26 (Sun.) in 2026.
