Tour of Senzaki, a port town that prospered as a port of call for Choshu and Kitaura whaling and Kitamae ships

Senzaki, Nagato City, was called Setozaki in the Edo period (1603-1867) and was a prosperous port town. In addition to being a fishing port for sardines and whales, it was also a port of call for the westbound route of the Kitamae-bune, and commerce thrived there. With an old map in hand, the Nagato Volunteer Guide Association will take you on a tour of the town to see what it must have looked like in those days. [Every Sunday from August 2021 to March 2022 *Reservations required at least 3 days in advance.]

Map

Let's walk the streets with an old map in hand." is

This is a guided walk in which visitors can trace the history of the town while looking at beautiful old maps produced by the Choshu clan’s cartographer and guided by a local guide. Walking through the town with an old map in hand and thinking about the streets, townscapes, and people’s lives in the past will make you feel like you are on a little time trip. We hope you will enjoy this “historical and romantic” walk through the town.
